Sleep and steps: the boring stuff that changes your body
Everyone wants the perfect workout program. But two boring habits make a huge difference to fat loss and muscle gain: how much you sleep and how much you move outside the gym.
Sleep
Most adults do best with 7 to 9 hours a night. Short sleep makes you hungrier, makes training feel harder, and makes recovery slower. If you're dieting, poor sleep also makes it easier to lose muscle instead of fat.
- Keep the same sleep and wake time, even on weekends.
- Make your room dark, cool and quiet.
- Cut caffeine 8 hours before bed.
- Put your phone away 30 minutes before sleep. (Yes, even TikTok.)
Steps
Walking is the most underrated fat-loss tool there is. Daily movement outside of workouts can burn a lot more calories than people expect, and it doesn't eat into your recovery like hard cardio does. A good target for most people is 7,000 to 10,000 steps a day.
- Walk for 10 minutes after meals.
- Take calls on the move.
- Park farther away and take the stairs.
- Raise your average slowly, about 1,000 steps a week.
Why this works
Your workouts are maybe 5 hours a week. The other 160+ hours decide most of your results. Fix sleep and steps first, and everything else gets easier.
